While the eyes of the world might be focused on Russia right now, that’s by no means the only sporting event going down these next couple of weeks.
If you swear your loyalty to Rugby League and prefer something closer to home, then the upcoming clash between the Melbourne Storm and the Illawarra Dragons is one you won’t want to miss.
While waiting for this highly anticipated match, Le Garage looks into the colourful histories of both clubs and what you can expect on game day.
- Thursday, 5th July 2018
- Round 17
- 7:50pm at AAMI Park
The home team: Melbourne Storm
While rugby might be more of a NSW thing, Melbourne’s only team punches well above its weight: it’s the most successful team since the NRL was established in 1997.
How successful are we talking? The club had an amazing start in the league, winning their their first premiership in just their second year in the tournament!
While sullied by controversy, they’re still a strong team, occupying the number 5 spot on the ladder at the time of writing (week 15)… of course, they’ll be looking to climb to the no. 1 spot!
Coming off a strong 28-10 performance against Newcastle and (fingers crossed) a victory over the Roosters on the 29th, the odds of continuing wins don’t look too bad.
Add in the home game advantage, and you can be pretty confident of a strong performance come the 5th of July.
There’s only one small problem that might throw a spanner in the works: the opposition.
The visitors: the St. George Illawarra Dragons
Founded after the merger of St. George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers at the end of the 2008 season, the Dragons proved themselves worthy of their predecessors by fighting their way to the premiership in just 2 years later in 2010.
Over the years, the club has seen itself on the final stage 11 times. While the championship has eluded them since, the Dragons are still a strong team with an 11 out of 14 win record.
And in the 2017 season, the Dragons are continuing their good form, reclaiming their spot at the top spot of the NRL ladder.
Of course, these are just numbers. Who knows how their visit to Melbourne could go? Anything could happen – for example, the Dragons reclaimed the top spot after a close 2-point win over the 15th-place Bulldogs.
Fingers crossed, the Storm will be able to pull off a win!
