Carlton vs. Richmond

  • Where: MCG
  • When: Thursday 21st March

In what’s now become tradition, these two teams yet again kick off the new season of footy.

For the first time since Carlton was established, the team will have joint captains: Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty, while Richmond will be led by Trent Cotchin, who has captained the team since 2013.

Last year’s opening round saw Richmond defeat the Blues, 121 to 95, while the two teams never had the chance to face off during the rest of the season.

Did you know that this opening round was the highest attendance for a Round 1 match in VFL/AFL history?

After finishing last on the ladder in 2018 (and winning only two games), can Carlton kick off the new year with an upset win over the reigning minor premiers?

The odds say no, but when it comes to footy, you really never know!

More than 90,000 fans made their way to the MCG for this game, proving not only the strong fan base behind these two teams, but also that we really couldn’t wait for footy to return!

Collingwood vs. Geelong

Where: MCG

When: Friday 22nd March

Just 24 hours after the season opener, the MCG will welcome its second match of the season!

The boys in black and white put their boots back on the ground for the first time after their loss to the West Coast Eagles in the 2018 Grand Final.

Captaining the Pies this year is Scott Pendlebury who won the Norm Smith Medal back in 2010 during their Grand Final win against St Kilda (after the draw the previous week!).

Accompanying Pendlebury are well-known players Brodie Grundy, Taylor Adams, and Adam Treloar, all of whom made a name for themselves last year as stand out assets for the Magpies.

Leading the boys from Geelong this year will be a long time Geelong man, Joel Selwood.

Alongside Selwood in the Geelong leadership team will be fan favourite Patrick Dangerfield, accompanied by Harry Taylor and Zach Tuhoy.

Collingwood and Geelong last faced each other in round 8 of 2018 where Geelong lead the game for the majority of the match and went on to secure a 21-point win.

However, Collingwood did make it to the Grand Final last year where they gave West Coast a genuine scare, before the Eagles managed to clinch the flag by just five points!

The Pies vs. Cats game will certainly be one to watch.

Will the Magpies leave their failed premiership in the past? Can Geelong reaffirm their last win against Collingwood with another victory in round one?

We’ll find out soon!
