Between the world-class National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), our bustling music venues and Melbourne’s many, many laneways, it can’t be denied that our city is home to a vibrant art scene.
And this spring, Melbourne flaunts its art credentials with the 2018 Melbourne International Arts Festival (MIAF).
Seventeen days straight of art for artists, art fanatics, families, and guests to enjoy.
The 2018 festival boasts a broad mix of multimedia, dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and a variety of outdoor events.
Whether you’re a fan of the classics or interested in something a bit more contemporary, there’s something for everyone at this art extravaganza!

The art festival formerly known as Spoleto Melbourne
While it’s had its fair share of name changes (first Spoleto Festival Melbourne, then Melbourne International Arts Festival, to simply Melbourne Festival and back again), MIAF has been a staple of springtime in Melbourne for 32 years.
Kicking off with a Tanderrum ceremony performed by descendents of the Eastern Kulin Nation, MIAF offers 18 days straight of free and paid art events and performances.

Bringing together three worlds
The Melbourne International Art Festival doesn’t stand alone in its goal of bringing together the art world. In fact, it’s just one of a family of three such festivals.
Alongside it are its sister festivals:
- Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy (hence the original name)
- Spoleto Festival in Charleston, USA
Originally created with the goal of bringing the American and European art scenes in contact with each other, the Melbourne festival was added in 1986.
And thanks to the Melbourne branch of the family, art from all over Australia and the Pacific are getting the international recognition they deserve.
Preparing for the Melbourne International Arts Festival
Just like any visit to the city, a trip to the Melbourne International Arts Festival requires a little bit of planning.
Here are some tips to help you prepare before, during, and after the festival.

Now obviously, art can’t be rushed.
Often, you can lose yourself in a performance or find yourself mesmerised by a sculpture for longer than expected.
Stick to a timetable that’s too rigid and you could miss out on some interesting experiences.
What the program guide can help you with is planning:
- What else is nearby?
- How long is the walk?
- Are there any limited-time exhibits?
- If something’s too far, should it be moved to a different day?
Just remember: you don’t need to hold yourself too closely to your plan!
Note schedules and venues
We touched on this above. However, this part is important, so we decided it might be a good idea to address it separately!
Not all the art events going on during the festival are static. Many of the events are performances:
There’s also a list of special events that run on limited timeframes.
The only way to catch them for sure? Checking out when they run and purchasing your tickets in advance!
Secure CBD parking
And of course, you can’t forget about parking!
If you’re driving into the city for MIAF, you’ll need to find somewhere to leave your car for the day. Preferably, somewhere that’s:
- Close to the action
You can’t wait for the big day to look for a CBD parking space.
Combine that with time pressure if you’re attending an art installation with a strict time frame, and you have a potential nightmare in the making.
The secret to avoiding this? Planning ahead!
