Everybody loves a long weekend.
And in just a few days, we get to enjoy our first for the year: the Australia Day long weekend.
And as is to be expected for an event this big, there are plenty of events happening all across Melbourne!
While the day might commemorate the landing of the first fleet in Sydney all the way back in 1788, nowadays Australia Day is an occasion to celebrate Australia’s rich and diverse society, as well as the things that bring us together.
CBD road closures on Australia Day
With so much going on in the CBD this Australia Day, it’s no wonder that many of the city’s roads are shut.
Not only does this mean you’ll have to carefully plan your route, but you’ll also need to reconsider your plan when it comes to finding convenient Australia Day parking!
Luckily for you, Le Garage has you covered.
Thanks to our dual entry, you don’t have to worry about the Flinders Lane closure (between Elizabeth and Exhibition Streets) as our second entrance on Flinders Street will remain open and unobstructed all day and night.
Australia Day tennis
While the tournament may be winding down, that doesn’t mean that the tennis is over – in fact, there’s still a whole day worth of tennis running on Australia Day!
Australia Day is finals day, with not one, not two, but seven different finals starting from 1pm, including:
- Girls, boys, and quad singles finals
- Women’s and men’s wheelchair final
- And of course, the women’s singles final from 7:30pm
- This is followed by the mixed doubles final
Even if you weren’t lucky enough to snag seats to any of these exciting matches, you can still catch the action on the big screen at Federation Square.
Additionally, there are also plenty of public viewing venues right outside in Birrarung Marr, as well as in Southbank and pubs all over the CBD!
The 2019 Australia Day Parade
France has its Bastille Day Parade in Paris. The US has their Independence Day Parade in Washington DC.
Not to be outdone, Melbourne’s throwing its very own Australia Day parade – the only one held in Australia’s capitals!
Thousands of spectators gather every year to bear witness to this display of Melbourne (and Australian society in general). With community groups, organisations and participants from all walks of life, this event is a celebration of our rich and diverse community:
- Schools and sports groups
- Dance and musical organisations
- Ethnic and cultural groups
- And more!
Kicking off with at 11am with the official flag raising ceremony at Melbourne Town Hall, more than 1000 participants make their way down Swanston Street to the delight of spectators.
RACV Australia Day Festival
Running parallel in King’s Domain Garden (directly across the Yarra from the MCG) is the RACV Australia Day Festival, a day-long event that’s perfect for a family day out.
The RACV Australia Day Festival has it all:
- Music and live performances
- Free activities and fairground games
- Plenty of food to keep everyone fueled
- A flyover and aerial display
Since RACV was created as a motoring club first and foremost, you can also expect to see an impressive range of classic cars on display too.
And boy, does the RACV Australia Day Festival deliver, with hundreds revheads turning up for the heritage vehicle showcase with lovingly-restored vintage cars from all eras.
If you’re a bit of a car nut yourself, this is an event you certainly won’t want to miss!
