April in 2019 is somewhat unique: this is the first time since 2014 (and the last time until 2025) where Easter and ANZAC Day will fall in the same week.

If you have annual leave stockpiled away, you can cash some of it in to enjoy a 10-day weekend, or enjoy a short trip overseas!

For those of us who are staying closer to home however, there are still plenty of things going on in Melbourne’s CBD over the course of the week commemorating both public holidays.

Easter events in Melbourne’s CBD

Celebrate Easter 2019

  • When: Good Friday (19th April)
  • Time: 1-2pm
  • Where: Federation Square

Now in its fifth year, Celebrate Easter is a multi-denomination celebration of Easter.

Celebrate Easter sees three churches from different denominations come together in Fed Square, right in the heart of the CBD (and directly across from our Flinders Street parking garage).

This free event is a departure from ordinary, somewhat stuffy Easter service. In addition to prayers and readings, there will also be music and speeches, as well as food trucks and even a handful of stalls, all preaching the same message of goodwill.

Mad Hatter’s High Tea

  • When: Easter Saturday (20th April) and Easter Sunday (21st April)
  • Time: 11am or 3pm
  • Where: Stamford Plaza Hotel – 111 Little Collins Street

Dive down the rabbit hole this Easter!

If you want to take the kids to an Easter event that breaks away from the standard chocolate eggs and bunnies, the Stamford Plaza Hotel has you covered.

Imagine all the frills and class of high tea, dressed up in the weird and wacky designs of Wonderland – those who dress up might even be awarded with a prize.

This event is for adults and kids alike, and kids under 5 dine free of charge.

Bookings are essential. Click here to make a reservation – don’t be late!

Anzac day dawn service discount

ANZAC Day services

  • When: Thursday 25th April
  • Time: 6am (Dawn Service); 8:30am (ANZAC Day march); 1pm (commemorative service)
  • Where: Shrine of Remembrance, St Kilda Road

Services commemorating the sacrifices of Diggers past and present start from 6am in the morning with the Dawn Service, a sombre memorial that pays tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Concluding at 8:30am, the Dawn Service is followed by the ANZAC Day March, led by current serving members, veterans and their descendants.

Finally, formal ceremonies conclude with a service at the Shrine.

Speeches will be made by dignitaries, capped off with a playing of The Last Post – this particular bugle call signifies a soldier’s watch coming to an end, and serves as a metaphorical send-off for the fallen.

The 2019 ANZAC Day clash

  • When: Thursday 25th April
  • Time: First bounce at 3:20pm
  • Where: MCG

And of course, no mention of ANZAC Day would be complete without a mention of the annual ANZAC Day match.

Kicking off at 3:20pm, the ANZAC Day Match pits Collingwood and Essendon – one of footy’s longest-running rivalries – against each other in front of a crowd of thousands at the ‘G.

This is one of the biggest dates in a footy fan’s calendar, with last year’s clash drawing in more than 91,000 attendees – a number that’s comparable to turnout during finals season!
