Christmas is Melbourne’s favourite time of the year. The premise of “too early for Christmas decorations” doesn’t seem to apply in our great city, with decorations, twinkling lights, and that Christmas spirit creeping in as soon as Halloween is over.

As weather improves, school starts to wraps up, and holidays are within arm’s reach, there’s so much to do and see to help us get in the Christmas spirit. We’ve compiled a list of must-do Christmas events, all located in Melbourne’s CBD. Time to fill up your weekends!

Christmas in Melbourne

Christmas Square

City Square becomes Christmas Square in one of Melbourne’s most famous Christmas displays.

There’s a ton to do throughout the month at Christmas Square. Here’s a quick summary:

Enjoy a Christmas Boogie

On Saturday 26th November and Saturday 3rd December, enjoy a boogie to favourite Christmas tunes with live DJs. Be there between 12pm and 1pm!

Christmas Story Time

On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 5th-21st December, enjoy some Christmas stories in sessions held from 12:15pm-12:45pm. Perfect for the little ones (and those young at heart!)

Santa Visits

See Santa! He visits every day at 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm, and on Fridays, he’s also there from 4pm-7pm.

Free Photos

Deck yourself in your best festive gear and get your pose on with a free photo and Christmas card.

Christmas Tree

Every night, enjoy a stunning sound and light show, featuring that famous Christmas Square tree.

Christmas Projections

A continuous light show on the facades of Melbourne buildings – from Fed Square and up Swanston Street to the Town Hall – will light up the city!

Keep the kids up long enough to catch the spectacular show, which kicks off at 9pm and ends at 11pm.

Myer Windows

This tradition has been a part of Melbourne families for decades. The windows bring both traditional and unique Christmas stories to life, with many incorporating a distinctive Aussie twist.

The windows were unveiled on Tuesday 10th November (like we said, Melbourne gets the holiday season started early!) and will be open until Thursday, 5th January 2017.

Christmas Cringe Photobooth

The Christmas Cringe Photobooth is hilarious!

Wear your best Christmas sweaters (the uglier, the better!) and create ridiculous poses with friends. Over-the-top festive accessories are encouraged, and you can share your cringe photos online using the hashtag #ChristmasCringe.

Gingerbread Village

Just up the road from Christmas Square, you’ll find Gingerbread Village at the Melbourne Town Hall.

500kg of gingerbread, 360kg of icing, and 150kg of marzipan is transformed to create an amazingly unique Christmas backdrop.

The event, by EPICURE, is now in its sixth year and gold coin donation upon entry raises important funds. This year, funds will be donated to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation – a cause we all love getting behind!

Christmas Shopping in Melbourne

What’s Christmas in Melbourne without gift giving? Make the most of the city by completing some much-needed Christmas shopping.

Wander through the quaint arcades and laneways (decorated for the festive season, of course), visit more than 225 stores at Emporium, and don’t forget to pick up some gifts in the Bourke Street Mall.

Lust over the luxurious designer boutiques in the Paris End of Collins Street – maybe pick up your Christmas present to yourself, too?
