2018 Buddha’s Day and Multicultural Festival
- Where: Federation Square
- When: Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th May
Did you know that Buddhism ranks as the third-most practiced religion in Australian society?
While the 2.4% might sound small, that’s still over half a million people actively following Buddha’s teachings.
And on the third weekend of May, many of them will descend upon Federation Square in celebration of one of the most important dates of the Buddhist calendar.
What for? Well, with a name like “Buddha’s Birthday”, it’s not hard to guess!
Commemorating the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama (or as most people know him, the Buddha), faithfuls from all over Melbourne’s urban sprawl meet to enjoy traditional Buddhist ceremonies.
Originally conceived as a way for Melbourne’s community of Buddhists to commemorate Buddha’s birthday, this annual 2-day festival has evolved into a celebration of Melbourne’s many different cultural backgrounds.
In its own words, the festival aims to promote “inclusiveness, cultural awareness, cultural understanding; and enhances community spirit and social harmony.”
In addition to traditional celebrations, there’ll be plenty of other events, including:
- A food fair
- Social and spiritual well-being lectures
- Musical performances
- Inter-faith discussions
- Tea ceremonies
- Dragon Boat racing
- Bodhi Tree Art installation
- An animal sanctuary
And that’s just scratching the surface. This event plays host to over 40 different activities and a diverse range of food stalls offering cuisine from all over the world.
Whether you want to learn more about Australia’s third-most popular religion or simply want to broaden your palate by trying out new foods, there’s something for just about everyone here.
Why not immerse yourself in this unique and spiritual event?
We’re expecting 80,000 visitors, and with more than 40 activities and 15 food stalls, you might indeed find yourself visiting the festival on both days!
