Not quite hip-hop, not quite R&B, American singer and songwriter SZA certainly has a unique sound.

Without a doubt, this can be partially attributed to her unique background.

Raised as an Orthodox Muslim, SZA (real name Solána Imani Rowe) was first a gymnast, and then studied to become a marine biologist before kicking off her musical career.

Needless to say, that’s a background you don’t see too often in modern music!

If you watched Marvel’s Black Panther, you might even recognise her voice already from the soundtrack.

In particular, All The Stars (a collab with Kendrick Lamar which played during the film’s closing credits, and which was nominated for several Grammys).

In her own music however, SZA’s style is generally more low-key.

With her deep, husky voice, SZA’s sound puts a unique spin on R&B, blending elements of soul and chillwave, creating a unique sound that’s almost psychedelic in places.

An artist to keep your eye on

Since first debuting in 2012, SZA been on a tear. Within a couple of years, she was collabing with other high-profile artists, including:

  • Chance the Rapper
  • Cardi B
  • Maroon 5
  • Kendrick Lamar
  • Tame Impala
  • Rihanna

Just to name a few!

These industry giants aren’t the only ones that have noticed SZA’s talent – while she’s only been around for a couple of years, she already has five Grammy nominations under her belt, including Best New Artist!

Been playing their new album on repeat or bopping along to hits such as Twice and Cocoon?

This Welsh band is fresh off the success of their third album, The Balance, which was released earlier this year.

And while they’re in Australia for the annual Splendour In The Grass festival, Catfish and the Bottlemen will be swinging by Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle afterwards to play for fans who might not be able to make the trip to the NSW-Queensland border.

You can check out their music on Youtube, Spotify and Google Play Music

What to expect

Catfish released their new album The Balance in April this year.

Peaking at number 9 on the ARIAs upon release, this album is full of massive hits.

Get a taste by listening to the full album here.

And if you prefer their older stuff, don’t panic – while we don’t know exactly what the setlist will feature, you’ll probably also hear a good spread of older songs.
