Can you believe it’s the middle of November already?

With summer – and Christmas – looming on the horizon, it’s time for Melbourne to put on a show. Much like the years before, the city plays host to a fantastic range of Christmas events to enjoy. If you’re looking for things to do in the city this silly season, Melbourne has plenty to offer!

Christmas shopping in Melbourne

It wouldn’t be a Christmas activity blog without at least one mention of Christmas shopping.

Melbourne’s shopping scene is (in our biased opinion) the best in the country. From quirky local boutiques to high-end global fashion houses plus fabulous department stores, Melbourne’s shopping scene is one of the best… even if our wallets don’t agree!

Bourke Street Mall

Bourke Street Mall is Melbourne’s premier shopping district. With leading brands and stores including David Jones, Myer, H&M, Zara and Pandora, this strip is the place to be. As one of the city’s first car-free zones, the Bourke street mall has a uniquely laid-back atmosphere.

Take a stroll from shop to shop, or maybe sit down for a latte and a muffin and soak in the bustling atmosphere.

You can’t shop at Bourke Street during December without stopping by Myer’s Christmas windows! Operating since 1956, the stunning window displays are an essential part of Christmas in Melbourne. Skilled artists work for months, painstakingly hand-crafting elaborate dioramas and models.

On top of that, there’s also live entertainment and family-friendly activities like live performances and, of course, a visit from Santa himself for all the kids to enjoy. For a shopping trip that won’t end with the kids demanding to go home, set a day aside to explore everything Bourke Street Mall has to offer.

Big-name brands in Melbourne

Melbourne is home to outlets for some of the world’s most prestigious brands. If you ever pass by Collins Street, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about!

With high-end boutiques such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Tiffany and Co, there’s a good reason this quarter of the city is known as the Paris End!

There are also fantastic international retailers littered throughout the CBD. So if you’re looking for presents for a more refined taste, set a whole day aside to explore Melbourne’s retailers and boutiques.

The weird and esoteric

What happens if your friends and family have interests that are a bit more… out there? Maybe you might not find their interests in your local department store.

Fortunately, Melbourne has plenty of niche and novelty stores to cater to everybody’s interests!

  • Is geek culture your scene? You can’t go past the Minotaur comic shop, with film, comics, anime/manga and gaming merchandise from every era and just about every franchise imaginable.
  • Do you have a friend or family member who breathes poetry? Collected Works Bookshop, otherwise known as the only dedicated poetry bookshop has everything from Banjo Paterson all the way down to Booster Puce.
  • And if you have an obsession with the arcane? Muses of Mystery has you covered. If you or anyone you know is a passionate believer in the occult, paganism or good old fashioned black magic, Muses of Mystery’s catalogue is sure to have something for you.

No matter what you, your friends or family are into, with so many shops in and around Melbourne, finding the perfect gift has never been easier!

Christmas events and shows

Carols by Candlelight

Now in its 79th year, the Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight has gone from a small gathering of a couple dozen people to a Melbourne tradition, with thousands packing the Sidney Myer Music Bowl for a night of pure joy!

Featuring local artists big and small and a massive choir, lend your voice to timeless Christmas carols. You might even get a surprise visit from the man in red himself!

This event isn’t just a magical way to experience your Christmas Eve – all proceeds go towards helping blind or vision-impaired children, making it a great way to give back to the community over the Christmas season! Snap up your tickets today.

Christmas Wonderland

Due to ongoing work on Metro rail works, Melbourne’s Christmas Festival will be relocated from its traditional City Square location to Federation Square and the surrounding laneways.

And with even greater space at its new Federation Square location, this year’s Christmas Festival promises to be bigger and even more spectacular than previous years.

Not only will the spectacular evening light shows make their return to Swanston Street, but for the first time ever, the event will be enhanced with a free augmented reality app which brings Christmas stories and characters to life!

Naturally, the jolly man himself will be present, taking on all the good children’s wishes and posing for photos underneath a supersized, 16-metre Christmas tree. This is in additional to a nativity scene and the return of the giant Christmas Bauble.

If you have kids, then make a date in December and stop by Federation Square for family-friendly entertainment that won’t cost you a cent!

Fed Square parking

Say goodbye to city parking woes thanks to Le Garage. Fed Square parking has never been easier: with dual entry on Flinders Street and Flinders Lane, and a mere 100m walk, reach Fed Square and all it has to offer this Christmas season.
