When people think of musicals, they generally think of either New York’s Broadway or London’s West End.

And for good reason – these two districts are powerhouses of musical theatre, with many of the world’s high-profile stage shows and productions beginning their lives here.

But New York and London aren’t the only theatre cities in the world…

Hopeless romantics and brides-to-be shouldn’t miss the opportunity to catch Australia’s biggest home-grown musical Muriel’s Wedding, now playing at Melbourne’s Her Majesty Theatre until the 16th of June.

Muriel’s Wedding in Melbourne at Her Majesty’s Theatre

“Wait a second,” you think to yourself. “Isn’t Muriel’s Wedding a movie?”

You’re right, of course. However, in 2016 it was announced that PJ Hogan (director of the original 1994 film) would be returning to adapt and expand the movie for the stage.

Joining him is director Simon Phillips, who was also in charge of directing the musical adaptation of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – talk about bringing your A-game!

Whether you’re a fan of romantic comedies or not, it’s hard not to identify with Muriel’s dream of having a perfect wedding!

In addition to the ABBA songs that characterised the original movie, the stage adaptation of Muriel’s Wedding also features 25 original songs written specifically for this production.

New music and lyrics are by Kate Miller-Heidke, who recently represented Australia at Eurovision!

About the Melbourne production of Muriel’s Wedding

After a successful debut in Sydney, Muriel’s Wedding comes down to Melbourne for the next leg of its Australian tour, before returning to Sydney and eventually making its way north to Brisbane.

Muriel is played by 23-year-old Natalie Abbott, who hails from the south coast of NSW.

After moving to Sydney to complete her Bachelor of Music degree in Musical Theatre, Natalie appeared in a number of smaller productions including The Witches of Eastwick and Bare: A Pop Opera. Muriel’s Wedding is her professional debut.

The 28-strong cast features performers with a range of high-profile credits to their name. For example, Stefanie Jones (who plays Rhonda) has previously worked on blockbuster productions like:

  • Les Miserables
  • The Sound of Music
  • Oklahoma!

With foot-tapping songs, fun lyrics and a relatable story at the heart of it all, there’s something for everyone.

If you plan on catching the show, you’ll have to move fast – Muriel’s Wedding is only in Melbourne until the 16th of June. And with tickets selling out fast, you’ll want to get your foot in the door as early as possible!
