Say ‘goodbye’ to 2016 and welcome 2017 with open arms at some of Melbourne’s best festivities, parties, dinners, events – and of course, fireworks – for New Year’s Eve.

We’ve collated a list of events (most of them free and family-friendly!) so you can properly plan how you will welcome the New Year in the world’s most liveable city!

Boxing Day Sales – Melbourne CBD

Preparing for an early night this Christmas to ensure you’re ready to tackle Melbourne’s best sales this Boxing Day?

The biggest and best day of the shopping year is fast approaching, and there’s no better place to snap up some seriously good bargains than Melbourne’s CBD.

Goods are priced to move, so when we say discounts, we mean it! Last year, Aussies smashed records, spending $2.3 billion dollars on Boxing Day. Major department stores throw open their doors from 5am and the sales last throughout most of January.

And what are people buying at the Boxing Day sales? Pretty much anything and everything, from clothes and shoes to sporting goods and electrical items, and everything in between. Hey – you’ve just spent a month buying gifts for others, now it’s time to treat yourself!

Melbourne’s Boxing Day Test

The Boxing Day Test kicks off our summer of cricket. Cheer on as Australia takes on Pakistan at the MCG from the 26th– 30th December.

The season doesn’t stop there, though: the 2nd One Day International is on Sunday 15th January 2017 (Australia vs. Pakistan) while the KFC Twenty20 International is on mid-February (Australia vs. Sri Lanka).

It’s a jam-packed summer of cricket – where some 60-odd thousand make their way to the MCG on Boxing Day, so make sure you book your parking in advance with Le Garage!

New Year’s Eve in Melbourne – free events

Enjoy free entertainment and stick around for the kid-friendly fireworks at 9pm. Young and old alike will also love the special screening of the terrific animated film Zootopia. Yarra Park is located within Melbourne’s Sports and Entertainment Precinct. It’s located immediately east of the MCG and is a short walk from Le Garage’s secure Flinders Street Parking.

Don’t forget to pre-book your parking for New Year’s Eve: not only will you enjoy a great saving, but you will also avoid the stress of finding a parking spot on Melbourne’s busiest night of the year.

Treasury Gardens

From 9pm-11pm enjoy the best music of 2016, then from 11pm-1am, DJ MzRikz takes over the decks. Take a step back from the crowds and enjoy the midnight fireworks from a slightly further vantage point at Treasury Gardens.

Located on Spring Street opposite Collins Street, Treasury Gardens is a short, 5-minute stroll from Le Garage.

These are two of several live, family-friendly sites organised and run by the City of Melbourne. Please note that these live sites are alcohol-free zones.

High Tea at The Langham

The Langham’s Melba Restaurant is offering two separate sessions for dinner this New Year’s Eve.

The first begins at 5pm and ends by 8pm, leaving you free to do whatever you want for the rest of the night (whether that’s explore the city, view the fireworks, or go home to bed – hey, we’re not judging!)

The second dining session is a 9pm dinner, which includes live entertainment and a delectable menu. Enjoy the midnight fireworks from this terrific vantage point. This event concludes at 1am.

“Traditional afternoon tea with a twist” is how Melbourne’s Park Hyatt describes its Festive Afternoon Tea sessions. For the whole month of December from 2:30pm to 5pm enjoy a delightful afternoon session at the Park Hyatt.
