First opening in 1886, Her Majesty’s Theatre has played host to some of the world’s best artists and shows.

In particular, it has made a name for itself as the destination for musical theatre in Melbourne – a crown it continues to wear, even to this day.

And it’s not just Broadway either – starting on the 31st of this month, it’s also playing host to the Australian premiere of School of Rock.

Based on the movie of the same name, musical and rock fans alike are in for a treat come the end of October!

But first, what is School of Rock?

Think back to 2003 when a little movie titled School of Rock hit cinemas.

Starring Jack Black during the early stages of his career, School of Rock follows – what else? – a classroom of school-aged rockers.

More specifically, it tells the story of a down-on-his-luck guitarist who takes on a substitute teaching role to pay rent. Whacky musical hijinks – and an awesome soundtrack, including Cream, Led Zeppelin, and The Who – ensue.

The movie was a major hit, earning a respectable $131 million at the box office, receiving solid reviews, and netting Jack Black a Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy.

A combination of rocking kids, Jack Black’s endearing charm, and killer music, the movie struck a chord with audiences of all ages, so much so, that in 2015 it was adapted into a stage musical!

School of Rock takes to the stage

  • Where: Her Majesty’s Theatre
  • When: 31st October 2018 to 1st February 2019

Following its worldwide success in US and UK in 2015, School of Rock makes its way Down Under, landing at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre for its Australian premiere.

Written by the patron saint of musical theatre and starring some of the best Aussie stage talent, School of Rock promises to be a hit!

Featuring a (naturally) heavily rock-inspired sound, School of Rock is a departure from what you might normally associate with stage musicals:

Instead of Broadway-style choruses, you can instead expect to hear guitar riffs. Instead of elaborate dance numbers, you’ll be treated to energetic drum solos.

Featuring a star-studded cast, catchy tunes and a heartwarming, engaging story, it’s a great way to spend a summer’s night.

Andrew Lloyd Webber

Phantom of the Opera. Evita. Cats. Jesus Christ Superstar.

These are just some of the titles under Andrew Lloyd Webber’s belt.

With a career spanning several decades (his first writing credits date back to the late 1960s) and a huge list of awards, the man has led a long and fruitful career.

Evidently, that still wasn’t enough for him!

Despite the movie featuring several unique tracks, the stage version of School of Rock features an entirely original rock-themed soundtrack (naturally), with 20 new tracks written specifically for this adaptation.

So even if you’ve already seen the movie, there’s bound to be something new.
