Of course, that isn’t the only thing that’s heating up – so too is the footy!

September is when it all counts. 12 teams have been discarded, leaving us with only 6 to battle it out for the 2019 premiership.

Is there anything better than Friday night footy in Melbourne?!

Hot off a 55-point win over the Bombers during the first Elimination Final, the Eagles will be looking to defend their premiership.

And so far, things aren’t looking too bad for them.

They’re the favourites going in, with strong showings in recent weeks. It’s no wonder that most punters predicting a narrow West Coast victory.

With the recent loss of star ball-winner Mitch Duncan and defeat at the hands of the Pies in the qualifying finals, a straight sets loss is on the cards – something the Cats will be desperate to avoid.

No wonder people are getting antsy about Geelong’s chances!

It would be unwise to discount the Cats so early, however – while the circumstances may have been different, Geelong thrashed West Coast by a whopping 58 points the last time these two sides met all the way back in Round 6.

Whoever gets through, they’ll have to face Collingwood in…

Preliminary final 1: The Pies vs the winner of SF2

  • When: Saturday, 21st September
  • Time: TBC
  • Where: MCG

Whoever wins semifinal 2 (either Brisbane Lions or GWS, who battle it out on Saturday 14th September at the Gabba) will have to face a confident Collingwood.

With a narrow win over the Cats in QF1 and a string of wins in the final games of the season, the Pies are certainly looking like strong contenders for the premiership… assuming they can get past the winner of semifinal 1, of course!

Taking place the day before preliminary final 1, PF1 will see the Pies come up against the winner of semifinal 2, Brisbane vs GWS.

With a 47-point loss to Richmond (on their home ground no less), the Lions will be eager to reclaim their pride… assuming they make it past the Giants, of course.

Not to mention, it’ll be their first finals campaign in a decade!

The Giants are nothing to scoff at, either. GWS pulled off a convincing win over the Bulldogs to secure their spot.

They’ll still face an uphill battle against a strong Brisbane – with Toby Greene cleared to play by the AFL tribunal however, they have a good shot of making it through!

Preliminary final 2: Tigers vs the winner of SF1

  • When: Friday 20th September
  • Time: First bounce at 7:50pm
  • Where: MCG

Taking place the day before preliminary final 1, PF2 will see the Tigers come up against the winner of semifinal 1, which is being played between Geelong and West Coast.

If Geelong manages to avoid straight sets and beat West Coast, they’ll have an opportunity to avenge their loss in the first qualifying final.

With hindsight on their side, the Cats might be able to make changes to their lineup to overcome a strong Richmond.

And if it’s the Eagles that get through… well, it’s pretty obvious what’s at stake here – if they want to earn a second consecutive premiership, they’ll need to get through the Tigers first.

Whoever wins, they’ll have to face down Richmond, fresh off a 10-game winning streak.

Whatever the outcome, this game promises to be a thriller at a packed ‘G!

The big one – the 2019 Toyota AFL Grand Final

  • When: Saturday 28th September
  • Time: First bounce at 2:30pm
  • Where: MCG

And of course, we couldn’t talk about finals season without at least mentioning the big one!

As is tradition, the grand final will be held at the ‘G.

No matter who qualifies, you can expect a packed house – it’s only the biggest event of the footy calendar, after all!

And while there may not have been any official announcement just yet, if previous years are anything to go off, there’s a decent chance that on-site MCG parking might not even be open for the big day!
