Running since 1987, the Comedy Festival is a Melbourne staple.

Each year, the world’s best comedians coming down to our city to provide enough belly laughs, chortles, and guffaws to take us through winter.

And the 2019 festival promises more of the same!

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is just one such example – it’s the

third largest international comedy festival in the world.

Not bad for our little corner of the globe, right?!

Featuring comedians from theatre, film, television, radio, performing arts and more, the Comedy Festival is set to deliver more than a month’s worth of belly laughs!

In addition to the world’s funniest people, the festival also provides workshops and programs that educate youngsters in the comedy craft.

Arj Barker

  • When: Tuesday 9th – Sunday 21st April
  • Time: starts 6pm or 7pm, depending on the night
  • Venue: Athenaeum Theatre, 188 Collins Street

Arj Barker is one of the biggest names in stand-up comedy right now – no surprise he’s going to be coming down to Melbourne yet again!

We Melburnians are a lucky bunch – we’ve got the former Flight of the Conchords star for a whopping 12 day straight, meaning you’ll have plenty opportunities to catch his hilarious show.

Of course, you can also expect this show to be in high demand, so you’ll want to snap up your tickets very soon!

Comedy Zone Asia

  • When: March 28 to April 21
  • Time: starts 6pm or 7pm, depending on the night
  • Where: Chinese Museum – Silk Room, 22 Cohen Pl, Melbourne

Melbourne’s Chinese Museum is more than just a place for education –  it also plays host to many unconventional events, just like Comedy Zone Asia.

Featuring a panel of talented comedians from all over the Asian continent, Comedy Zone Asia is a bit of a unique experience – one which Melburnians from many of the city’s Asian communities are sure to relate to!

Charlie Pickering

  • When: Thursday 28th to Sunday 31st March, Tuesday 2nd April, and Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th April
  • Time: starts 7:20pm or 8:20pm, depending on the night
  • Where: ACMI, Federation Square, Melbourne

While the word “international” may be in the name, that doesn’t mean that overseas acts are your only option – there’s also plenty of local talent on display!

Case in point: renowned Melbourne comedian Charlie Pickering.

As former Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation regular, The Project host, and current host of his own John Oliver-esque news show, Charlie Pickering’s style of humour has always had a bit of a political edge to it.

And his current routine, Us & Them promises to tackle Australia’s current political mess with Charlie’s signature sharp wit – something that’s sorely needed if you ask us!

The (Very) Big Laugh Out

  • When: Friday 5th to Saturday 20th April

Don’t worry, the festival hasn’t forgotten about the kids!

There are plenty of G-rated routines going on, suitable not just for children but the whole family, too!
