No conversation about Melbourne is complete without mentioning the MCG. As one of the city’s iconic landmarks and arguably the centre of Australian sport, there’s always something going on at the ‘G.
A couple of weeks ago, we posted about the Moonlight Cinema – we strongly recommend booking your tickets now, while summer’s still around, to enjoy this unique movie experience!
Of course, the Moonlight Cinema isn’t the only place Melburnians can go for a movie under the stars! Hosted by the Bank of Melbourne, Cinema at the ‘G is back again this year to offer an open-air cinema experience like no other.
On Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th February, the hallowed grounds of the MCG plays host to screenings of two fantastic family-friendly movies. Bring a picnic rug, some snacks and get comfy on the turf with your friends and family.
Not only does Cinema at the ‘G promise a great night out – you’ll also be making a difference to the lives of people in need all over Victoria.
As this is only a two-night event, let Le Garage be a part movie night at the MCG! But before you do, let’s take a look at the movies that will be featured and what we can expect from this exciting event.
Cinema at the ‘G 2018
- Friday, 23rd February
- Gates open at 6:30pm
- Movie starts 8:30pm; 113 minutes
Released in 2017, Wonder is based on a novel written by R.J Palacio and directed by Stephen Chbosky (author, director, and producer of The Perks of Being a Wallflower).
Unlike other school kids, fifth-grader August “Auggie” Pullman suffers from a rare facial deformity called Treacher Collins syndrome. This touching coming-of-age story follows Auggie as he struggles to fit in with the other kids and come to terms with himself.
An inspiring and moving film, it stars Academy Award winner Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay. Get the tissues ready, because we’re certain at least some tears are going to be shed by the end!
Get your tickets to Wonder and be touched by Auggie’s story at the MCG on Friday, 23rd February.
Remember the Titans

Cinema at the ‘G info
Unlike other movie experiences, Cinema at the ‘G is a little bit different. Instead of chairs, you’ll be watching from the same turf that sees some of Australia’s biggest sporting events!
Pack your cushions and pillows
Anything that can dent or puncture the ground (like stools and chairs) are a no-go, so make yourself comfortable with a couple of pillows, a picnic rug, or a yoga mat. You wouldn’t want to ruin the turf so close to the beginning of the 2018 footy season!
Check the forecast
As with any open-air event, you’ll want to check the forecast before you go. And since it can get a little bit chilly after dark, don’t forget to keep yourself warm! We recommend bringing along some warm clothing, and blankets so you can layer up if the temperature falls.
Bring your own snacks!
What’s a cinematic experience without food? You are welcome to bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic drinks to the MCG. Pop-up kiosks will also be selling hot popcorn and a variety of drinks and snacks.
Heading to Cinema at the ’G? Avoid the stress of MCG parking at Le Garage!
While summer might be winding down, the activities certainly aren’t! There are plenty of unmissable events going on in the city. Grab your friends and settle down for a night (or two) of cinema underneath Melbourne’s starry night sky.
Events like Cinema at the ‘G don’t happen often – expect a massive crowd to gather on both nights. And don’t be too surprised if you find yourself struggling to find a parking space!
If you plan on heading to Cinema at the ‘G with your family and friends, you’ll want to make sure you land yourself a secure space for your car – especially with MCG parking reserved for VIP ticket holders and limited Yarra Park parking available only “subject to availability”.
Avoid the stress of finding a safe place to leave your car by checking in with Le Garage!
Our 24-hour car park is ideally located in Flinders Street and is only a couple hundred metres away from the MCG.
Best of all, you can save even more when you book online in advance!
