If someone asked you, “What is Fed Square?” what would you tell him or her? Hard to narrow it down, isn’t it? Even Wikipedia defines it as the rather general “mixed-use development”!
Located on the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street, and adjacent to one of Australia’s most iconic images, Flinders Street Station, Federation Square is a Melbourne icon.
When you look at all it has to offer, it comes as no surprise that 80 million people visit Fed Square every year.
Melbourne’s Visitor Centre is located underground, but its entrance is the green glass structure directly on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, right opposite the train station.
Plaza and screen
This open space is used to broadcast events like the AFL Grand Final and the soccer World Cup. During good weather, you’ll find people enjoying the sunshine and a meal or drink from the many restaurants and bars located right in the heart of Fed Square.
That iconic glassed walls facing Flinders Street is the atrium. It is a unique venue space featuring a number of galleries.
NGV’s Ian Potter Centre
The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is actually situated over the Yarra River next to the Arts Centre, but the Ian Potter Centre, a branch of the NGV, is located right here in Fed Square. It’s dedicated exclusively to Australian art including photography, prints, drawings, and fashion.
ACMI is a favourite amongst many Melburnians, showcasing film, television, and digital culture. It hosts exhibitions, event, and film screenings, delighting all age groups across a range of genres.
